Bungkus Bagus has reimagined Sambal Goreng, the traditional Indonesian mix of fried shallots, garlic, and chilies, into a versatile crispy topping that works well in any pantry.

The savory notes and hint of sweetness from the shallots come through first, followed by a gentle heat that ties all the flavors together.

I like adding this topping to just about everything—perfect on rice with a fried egg, and a great addition to ramen or stir-fries.

Bungkus Bagus was founded by the two sisters, Celene & Tara Carrara, who grew up in Bali and later moved to Los Angeles. Celene is a makeup artist and Tara is a doula, but in 2019, when Covid struck, and the sisters found themselves jobless, they came up with an idea that first started as a nasi bungkus pop-up and later turned into the pantry goods brand Bungkus Bagus.
