What is Dan Dan Sauce?

Dan Dan Sauce is a quintessential element of the iconic Sichuan dish, Dan Dan noodles. Originating from China’s Sichuan province, this sauce embodies a complex flavor profile, intermingling spicy, nutty, savory, and a touch of sweetness. It is traditionally made with roasted Sichuan peppercorns, chili oil, minced meat (often pork), preserved vegetables, soy sauce, and sesame paste or peanut butter. The resulting sauce is aromatic, with a pronounced heat that tingles the palate, characteristic of Sichuan cuisine. Over time, its popularity has soared beyond its native land, leading to various adaptations worldwide. Today, it is not just limited to noodles but serves as a versatile condiment for various dishes.

2 Hungry Birds – Sanne: This is an amazing sauce and the level of heat is just perfect (spicy, but not too spicy). Add the sauce to a bowl of noodles, sprinkle with cilantro, garlic, scallions and roasted peanuts, and you have a delicious meal in less than 10 minutes.
